Mobile signal 'boosted' for Tynwald Day

MT deploys extra mast in St John's to cope with demand

Mobile internet will be boosted in St John's for tomorrow's Tynwald Day ceremony.

Manx Telecom has confirmed additional resources will be made available in a bid to avoid a repeat of connectivity issues see last year.

The telecoms provider says the mobile signal will be strengthened for this year's event, to ensure traders are able to take card payments.

Last year, a number of businesses with stalls at Tynwald couldn't get their card machines to connect.

The issues saw some traders take to social media, reporting that the issues had left them out of pocket.

At the time, Manx Telecom apologised, and said it would review its coverage for future events.

MT said 2021's ceremony was significantly busier than in 2019, resulting in greater demand on its mobile network, while the visit of the Princess Royal last year resulted in an increase in live streaming and uploading videos.

For 2022, an additional temporary mast has been deployed at the site, similar to the set-up used to increase capacity at the Grandstand during TT.
