More consultation sought on placement of tram tracks

Work to upgrade the promenade and move the horse tram tracks has been put on hold.

Phase 2 of the major scheme, which involved re-locating the horse tram tracks to a dedicated corridor on the seaward side of the road was scheduled to start this autumn.

But a new proposal now shows the tracks being moved on to the promenade walkway.

It follows meetings between Infrastructure Minister Phil Gawne and members of Douglas Borough Council and representatives of local businesses including the retail and hotel sector.

Mr Gawne, who took over as minister in July, says there's strong support for moving the tramway on to the Promenade Walkway, an option which had been rejected in the past because of concerns about placing the tracks above the IRIS sewerage tanks.

The two options regarding the tram tracks will be on public display in the main foyer of the Sea Terminal from the 7th to 11th of this month and members of the project team will be available to answer questions on the proposals from 10am to 8pm on Friday 10th and Saturday 11th October.

Visitors to the display will be invited to provide feedback about their preferred option by completing a feedback form.
