Mushroom growers to sell Greeba Farm Ltd

Not an easy decision, say owners

A Manx mushroom grower will stop production next month after more than a decade in the industry.

Greeba Farm Ltd produces around 8,000 pounds of the product for the local market every week, and employs around 10 people on a full and part-time basis.

Each of them will now be made redundant - owners Mark and Kathy Irwin say it wasn't an easy decision to make.

Only last year, it was given an excellence award as Best Medium Sized Enterprise of the Year.

The farm is now being placed onto the commercial market, with a view to finding a farmer to take on the project –however, all options are being considered.

The Irwin’s are working closely with government to find new jobs for their staff – which they say is a top priority.

The Department of Environment, Food and Agriculture insists it'll work with them to promote the business in the interim.

Member responsible for DEFA Ralph Peake said it’s hoped the new owners will take advantage of the new food business grant scheme down the line.
