New book marks 170th anniversary of Brig Lily Disaster

29 Port St Mary men died in shipwreck explosion in 1852

A new book has been published, marking the 170th anniversary of a shipwreck in the south of the Island that cost almost 30 lives.

The Lily wrecked on rocks at Kitterland on 27 December 1852 after leaving Liverpool in stormy conditions, resulting in the deaths of five crew members.

A group from Port St Mary attempted to salvage the cargo, but gunpowder on board the ship exploded, killing 29 Manxmen.

'The Explosion That Shook Port St Mary' has been published by John Wright from Rushen Heritage Trust, piecing together first-hand accounts, newspaper reports and the findings of the inquest.

The book is available at the Rushen Heritage Centre in Port Erin, the Bridge Bookshop, Manx National Heritage outlets, Torden Newsagents in Port St Mary and through the Rushen Heritage Trust's website.
