New charity to tackle homelessness

A new charity has been formed to help the homeless in the Isle of Man.

Kemmyrk is Manx for shelter, and its aim is to educate the public about the problem, find out exactly how many people don't have adequate accommodation and help them back on their feet.

It's estimated there are 40 people sleeping rough, while around 300 have no consistent housing.

The charity is supported by the Department of Social Security, and director Andrew Swithinbank, says people can be homeless for all sorts of reasons.

But he says there is no reason for it to be a permanent situation (audio file attached):
