New deal for Island's territorial waters

A new fishing rights deal has been signed, extending the Isle of Man's control of waters up to 12 miles off the Manx coast.

The Fisheries Management Agreement is designed to combat over fishing in the Irish Sea and was signed by all five nations which border it.

It's the result of long negotiaitons between DEFA minister Phil Gawne and his counterparts in England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.

Until now the UK government has had the final say on fisheries between 3 and 12 miles.

Mr Gawne says the new power to control fishing much further out to sea is a big steo forward for the Island
