New plan for major road scheme in north

Compromise plan to reduce disruption

Fresh proposals for a major road repair scheme in Ramsey have been drawn-up, aimed at reducing disruption to the public.

The Department of Infrastructure and Manx Utilities have scrapped their original plan to refurbish Lezayre Road, after complaints it would take too long and prove too much of a headache.

Now a reduced set of works and fresh designs have been tabled, with a view to contractors starting in summer 2018.

Manx Utilities have looked again its original proposal, to install a large diameter water main the entire length of Lezayre Road.

That plan's now been revised, after objections from residents, business owners, and schools in its path - with MU offering an alternative routing for the main.

The £475,000 scheme won't meet all the DoI's objectives, but offers what it calls 'an acceptable compromise' to extend the life of the road and modernise the utilities  infrastructure.

It includes resurfacing a 1.1 kilometre section of Lezayre Road and full reconstruction of Bircham Avenue junction.

The updated scheme has been outlined to local businesses, MHKs, Bus Vannin and the education department.

If agreed, the work would be carried out in two phases, around the 2018 TT and Festival of Motorcycling.

The original scheme would have taken many months, and spanned two winters.
