Work starts to replace 80 year old structure
Work to replace the Peel Harbour Road Bridge gets underway today (Mon 8).
Following planning approval, public consultation and tender process, construction is now expected to take place until mid-March next year - a total of roughly 20 weeks - at a cost of £530,000.
A temporary bridge with traffic light controls will cross the River Neb, accessable through Peel marina boatyard - that's due to be set up a week today, when the current bridge will be closed.
The 80-year-old hardwood timber structure has reached the end of its usable life, and has been subject to a rolling maintenance programme since the 1990s.
The new bridge will be capable of carrying 44 tonnes, rather than the 20-tonne limit of the previous version, and will also carry two lanes of traffic plus a footpath.
It'll be a single span structure with a concrete deck on steel beams, with changes to the approaches in both directions to ease traffic flow.
