New heritage trail 'vital' to capture history of village 'before it gets lost'

Lieutenant Governor helping launch 'Romance of the Colby River' walk today

The Isle of Man’s Lieutenant Governor will help launch a new walking route in the south of the Island today (30 March) which is designed to keep history alive.

Arbory and Rushen Parish Commissioners have created the ‘Romance of the Colby River Heritage Walking Trail’ which was inspired by an article published in Manx Life in 1981.

It was written by Cecil McFee and followed the Colby River from the sea at Kentraugh to its source on the slopes of Cronk-ny-Arrey-Laa.

Part of the new trail – which is marked with A1 signage boards - passes through an area once owned by former Colby resident Donny Collister.

This is the first project in his home village which has been awarded a grant from the Donny Collister Fund operated by Manx National Heritage.

A supporting exhibition is also being held at Colby Methodist Chapel where historical articles, photos and postcards – depicting life in the village in years gone by - will be displayed.

This will run as follows:

  • Thursday 30 March - 5pm to 8pm
  • Friday 31 March - 10am to 4pm
  • Saturday 1 April - 10am to 4pm
  • Sunday 2 April - 1pm to 4 pm
