New legal powers target spread of coronavirus

Manx residents could be kept in isolation if suspected of having illness

Increased legal powers to protect against the spread of coronavirus have been brought in on the Island.

The new regulations bring the Isle of Man in line with England, enabling emergency measures to be introduced if the virus is thought to pose an imminent threat to health.

The powers include keeping people in isolation if health professionals believe there's a reasonable risk they could have Covid-19.

Health Minister David Ashford provided an update to Alex Wotton:

The risk to individuals on the Island remains low, according to Public Health Isle of Man.

Almost 90,000 people have been infected with the disease worldwide, resulting in nearly 3,000 deaths.
