New policy to police seas now in force

DEFA to issue suspensions to cheats

A new policy designed to tackle ghost fishing of King Scallops and to better police the Island's seas has been introduced today (9 Feb).

The Department of Environment, Food and Agricutlure may now suspend or cancel a skipper's Sea Fishing Licence if there's sufficient evidence they've been flouting the law.

It follows a high-profile u-turn by the Government on measures which had called for all vessels fishing king scallops to have their catch inspected on Island each day.

A team has been created to monitor fishing activity, with system being established to 'swiftly identify serious discrepancies'.

DEFA now has the power to issue a suspension if it suspects an offence has been committed and if there's insufficient evidence to pursue a prosecution at that time.
