Work due to begin this year
A major scheme to redevelop Douglas Promenade will begin in September, pending planning approval.
An application has now been submitted to transform what many consider a gateway to the Island - comprising an entirely reimagined southern section with an improved traffic flow, larger walkways and an all-new 'cultural quarter' around the Villa Marina.
The northern end of the promenade will undergo a more 'simple' cosmetic facelift.
Tynwald voted in favour of the changes last year, which also include a redesigned horse tramway layout between Strathallan and the Bottleneck car park.
In a statement, Infrastructure Minister Ray Harmer said:
'The submission of the planning application is a further significant milestone towards our vision for the future of Douglas Promenade.
'I believe the Department’s proposal offers a solution that will benefit the people and the economy of the Isle of Man for generations to come.'
The scheme, which is expected to take three years at a cost of £21 million, will be finalised pending the approval of planners.
