Former deaf champion gives accessible lecture
A public lecture at the Manx Museum has broken new ground, becoming the first talk in the Island to offer live subtitling, using pioneering technology.
'Deaf and Dauntless' explored attitudes to disability, or perhaps super-ability, in Norse sagas and Celtic literature (28 Sept).
The guest speaker was Anglesey-born Gareth Foulkes, former Deaf Champion of the Island, who is an expert in disability issues and a specialist in Celtic and Viking history.
His free talk successfully incorporated the subtitling service in order to promote accessibility for deaf audiences.
Gareth's speech was streamed online to UK Charity StageTEXT, who provided the facility.
Katie King, Community Outreach Officer for Manx National Heritage, hopes that the technology will feature in future lectures at the Manx Museum.
