New Year sentence date for motorist 8 x over legal cocaine limit

33-year-old also admits having vehicle in dangerous condition

A Douglas man who got behind the wheel of his Land Rover despite having eight times the legal limit of cocaine in his system will be sentenced next year.

Darren Noel Dooley, of Oak Avenue, appeared at Douglas Courthouse where his advocate admitted it was a ‘very high reading’.

The court heard police had attended the 33-year-old’s home on 25 February on an unrelated matter.

Officers noticed his pupils were ‘severely constricted’ and he had ‘white residue and froth’ around his mouth; he was also switching between being ‘reasonable’ and ‘irrationally angry’.

Later that afternoon they saw him driving, on Spring Valley Road, and stopped him; a drug wipe test was carried out, which was positive for the Class A drug, and he was arrested.

He later pleaded guilty to drug driving.

The court heard just over three months later, on 7 June, Dooley was stopped by police again – this time on Cooil Road.

Officers noted the transit van he was driving had a number of defects and when it was examined issues were found with the seatbelt, lights, brakes, bumpers, tyres, windscreen and steering.

Dooley had originally denied having the vehicle in a dangerous condition and was due to stand trial on 22 January 2024 however he changed his plea to guilty.

A charge of drug driving, also from 7 June, was withdrawn by the prosecution.

A social enquiry report has been requested before Dooley is sentenced on 9 January; he’s been bailed until that date.
