No licence and no insurance means no Christmas cheer

Anagh Coar man fined

A man whose driving licence ran out nine days before police stopped him on Christmas Day has been fined £500.

Thirty-eight-year-old Peter Kevin Ross, of Lheannag Park in Anagh Coar, pleaded guilty to driving without a licence and having no insurance when he appeared before magistrates at Douglas Courthouse.

Prosecutor Hazel Carroon told the hearing Ross came to the attention of police officers on patrol when they spotted a faulty headlight on his Nissan Micra at around 2pm on 25 December.

They followed, and stopped him in Onchan – a computer check showed his driving licence had expired.

Ross’s advocate told the court his client was a self-employed window cleaner who thought the insurance policy on his work van covered him to drive his own car.

And he said his expired licence was the result of an oversight, as Ross believed it ran out at the end of December but hadn’t properly checked the date.

Magistrates fined him £100 for having no licence, and £400 for driving without insurance.

They also put six penalty points on his licence and ordered him to pay £50 towards prosecution costs.
