The NSC has avoided flood damage since a £355,000 flood defence system was installed in 2017.

Doors, barriers, gates and a high river sensor were fitted after floods resulted in significant damage at the sporting facility just over five years ago.

Two rivers near the site burst their banks in December 2015, resulting in flooding at the sports halls, squash court, all-weather pitch, athletics track and the Bowl.

The NSC is evacuated when the river sensor is triggered, something Education, Sport and Culture Minister Dr Alex Allinson says has happened twice:
