Number of hospital appointments cancelled in advance revealed

Largest number within Ophthalmology Department

Almost 10 per cent of hospital appointments for March have already been cancelled.

The figure has been revealed as part of a Tynwald written answer, which also shows the cancellation of appointments as far ahead as August.

Douglas North MHK David Ashford asked the Minister for Health and Social Care to confirm how many appointments at Noble's Hospital have been cancelled due to a lack of available staffing.

Data from the hospital's IT system, Medway, reveals 9.11 per cent of total appointments offered in March have already been cancelled.

The largest number is within the Ophthalmology Department, of which 325 have been cancelled.

Looking ahead, nearly 3 per cent of appointments have already been cancelled in April, and over 2 per cent in May.

Eight appointments as far ahead as August have also been axed.

In his written answer, Lawrie Hooper clarifies that cancellation figures for Ophthalmology in March are increased as currently the Ophthalmology Department is operating on 50 per cent medical staffing as there are Consultant Ophthalmologist and Staff Grade Ophthalmologist vacancies which cannot be filled via agency locum.

Recruitment for these posts is ongoing, with Consultant interviews taking place today (20 February) and Staff Grade interviews taking place next week.
