Onchan commissioners could act as managing agents for government

Onchan Commissioners are offering the government their housing expertise.

A few days ahead of a Tynwald debate on Care Department's recommendations, (distilled from the government commissioned Toulson Report), the village's commissioners are still fighting the idea of regional housing authorities, an idea suggested by the Department.

The Commissioners are now arguing that as they run their housing stock without a deficiency, that expertise could be usefully employed by government.

They believe that creating regional authorities would only create a further tier of government.

In a letter to Social Care Minister Chris Robertshaw, the commissioners suggest that Onchan could act as a "managing agent", performing the services recommended by the government.

They say this would not involve any costly restructuring - or the creation of further legislation.
