Onchan commissioners to cap rent rises at 15%

Rent rises for some council house tenants in Onchan will not be as bad as they could have been.

That's after the district's commissioners refused to put them up by more than 15%, when some could have been facing a 22% hike.

The move is in defiance of the Department of Social Care, which wants local authorities to reassess public sector homes, taking into account modernisations and extra facilities, and put up rents accordingly.

The local authority's lead member for finance, John Quaye, says a good number of homes would have been affected:
