PAC to investigate film investment losses

Tynwald back review of multi-million-pound write-off

Tynwald has approved a bid to look into multi-million pound losses by the Island's Media Development Fund, albeit in watered down form.

Douglas South MHK Kate Beecroft brought the original motion forward, saying an explanation was owed to Manx taxpayers as to why more than £26 million of their money was lost by the fund.

Mrs Beecroft wanted a Tynwald select committee to be set up to examine the issue, but it will initially be looked at by the public accounts committee instead.

She was backed up by her LibVann colleague, Ramsey MHK Lawrie Hooper, who said it was important for the sake of good governance and oversight.

Middle MHK Bill Shimmins claimed there was no point in looking into the losses, though, because it was in the past and many of the individuals involved at the time were no longer in position.

Onchan MHK Rob Callister wanted to know how much money had been brought into the Island, through the likes of people flying over here and staying in hotels while they filmed their projects.

Douglas East MHK Claire Bettison and Ayre and Michael MHK Tim Baker brought forward amendments, which called for the public accounts committee to look at the losses, to see whether further investigation was needed.

Mrs Beecroft told members the public are owed an explanation for the losses:
