Passengers hurt after Mannanan hits pier

Damaged port wave-piercing bow

Inspection due on damaged bow

Five passengers were taken to hospital after the Steam Packet fast craft Manannan collided with the Victoria Pier last night (Wed).

The extent of their injuries isn't currently known.

The vessel was approaching the harbour when her port (left) bow hit Victoria Pier just before 10.30pm.

Passengers who had been informed of technical difficulties with the vessel after departing Liverpool, were ordered to adopt the brace position shortly before the accident.

It's unclear whether those issues caused or contributed to the collision in Douglas.

Manannan was escorted into the harbour and docked at 10.40pm. Inspections of the damage are due to be carried out today.

This morning's 7.30am sailing to Liverpool was cancelled and passengers transferred to the 8.45am Ben my Chree service to Heysham.

The Steam Packet's back-up vessel MV Arrow has been on lease to Condor Ferries, serving the Channel Islands.

She is now en route to the Isle of Man and is due back in Douglas at 6am Friday (25 March).

These passengers said the bump as Manannan hit the pier came as quite a shock, though staff handled the situation well:
