PCR tests of 'highest standard' despite 'rare' false results - Manx Care

Reports of LFD tests showing different results

Manx Care says its PCR Covid testing process is of the 'highest clinical standard' despite 'rare occasions' when false results are returned.

It follows reports of some people testing negative for the virus at the Grandstand, despite proving positive with Lateral Flow Devices and PCRs taken at private labs.

The health body says the rest of the time PCR tests are close to 100% accurate, though admits they aren't 100% sensitive.

On the Island it's said 90% of people who do test positive on an LFD also return a positive PCR.

In terms of instances where private labs return different results to those of Noble's Pathology Lab, the health body says it isn't in a position to comment, as it's not aware of the controls or techniques in place there.

It assures the Noble's lab follows the UK Government Health Security Agency’s recommended method.

In addition, all tests are verified using internal and external quality controls from the National External Quality Assurance Scheme and the LGC and show 100% concordance with control samples

In the instance of a confirmatory PCR returning negative, people are exempt from isolation.

Manx Care, however, is reminding anyone who displays symptoms of Covid-19, or any respiratory illness should stay at home and keep away from other people until they no longer have any symptoms.
