Peel fire caused by e-bike

Two people rescued from top floor of the building

An e-bike caused a fire in Peel that left two people needing to be rescued from the top floor of a building.

Fire crews worked to locate and safely remove the pair after being called to reports of a structure fire yesterday evening.

Upon arrival officers found and escorted them out uninjured.

The cause of the fire was due to an electrical bicycle on the ground floor.

On inspection, it was found there was an issue with the bikes battery that had caused a fire which had not spread throughout the property.

However, evidence of scorch marks on the wall - where the bike was stored - highlighted the heat that the battery had produced.

People are urged to ensure electric bikes are stored in an appropriate storage area

"Electric bicycles are becoming more common and pose a fire risk that a normal bicycle does not so this should be considered when storing the bike."
