Project could take two and a half years

Work to remove 44,000 tonnes of silt from Peel Marina will get underway on Monday, 13 January.

The project, which will take up to two-and-a-half years, will see the area dredged twice.

A contractor will begin work on Monday to construct a temporary draining pool upstream from the marina, to store the material removed in the dredging process.

The first dredging is scheduled to get underway in March, with a second phase expected to take place in Spring next year.

A planning application for a strategic waste landfill facility at Turkeylands Quarry will be also submitted in the coming weeks, which will house the dredged material once it's completed the draining process.

The entire scheme is due to reach its conclusion in Spring or Summer 2022 when the draining pool is dismantled and filled in.

The Department of Infrastructure says it's continuing to work with Manx Utilities and the Department of Environment, Food and Agriculture on a long-term solution for the ongoing silt issues in Peel.
