Warning issued over swimming in harbours used by vessels

Government is warning swimming in harbours used by vessels and jumping in channels won't be tolerated.

A warning has been issued after what government claims has been a 'spate of dangerous activity'.

It also comes after reports by Police of bad behaviour at Raglan Pier in Port Erin.

Director of Harbours, Mark Kenyon, says there have also been incidents of vandalism.

These, he says, have included lifesaving equipment being defaced, damaged or removed.

As a result, the seaward section of Raglan Pier has been closed to the public except to those involved in vessel operations such as excursions.

It's an offence under the Harbours Act and by-laws to bathe, swim or dive from any harbour pier or any part of a harbour which is within a pier head.

By-laws mean officials can order people to leave the harbour area.

Failing to follow these instructions can result in a fine of up to £5,000 and prosecution.
