Plans for memorial to ship which sank off Langness 200 years ago

Nine men died when H.M. Brig of War Racehorse was wrecked

A new memorial to a ship which sank 200 years ago is being planned for Castletown.

Nine men died when H.M. Brig of War Racehorse was wrecked off Langness on 14 December 1822.

They included three from Castletown, taking part in the rescue effort.

Plans have been submitted for the memorial, which is to be made up of a cannon recovered from the wreck in the early 1980s and a plaque.

If approved, it'll be unveiled by the lieutenant governor on the anniversary.

It would be located next to the Harbour Office on Castletown Quay.

Fenella Collister runs A Walk Through Manx History on Facebook and shared the ship's story last August, calling for a memorial.

She's now expressed concerns about the design of the plaque, telling Manx Radio: "the sign features the lieutenant governor's name far too prominently. The plaque is to honour the Manx men and their names should be on it in big, bold letters, not his - it's not about him!"

Former Castletown MHK Tony Brown chairs the group which has put the plans together.

He says it's hoped the memorial will feature the names of people who lost their lives:
