MU says more chargers are 'urgently needed' on Island
It's hoped plans to install rapid electric vehicle chargers at the airport will tackle the 'urgent need' for more charging points on the Island.
Manx Utilities has submitted an application to convert 20 existing spaces at Ronaldsway used by commercial hire parking into six additional parking spaces for EVs with charging points and a canopy with solar panels.
The authority says there are currently only four rapid charge points on the Island for almost 1,600 registered electric vehicles, meaning more are urgently needed to provide flexible charging.
If approved, it's hoped the chargers will be used by businesses based on the site, airport patrons, staff and commuters.
MU also says the solar canopy, which would include battery storage, would assist with vehicle charging and reduce the load drawn from the grid.
It's estimated the project would provide annual carbon savings of up to 3,000 tonnes.
