Plans to introduce minimum broadband speed

Chief Minister moots 30mbps base line

High-speed broadband for Manx homes and businesses could become a requirement in the coming years.

Chief Minister Howard Quayle revealed plans for a national minimum connection speed in the House of Keys this morning (27 Feb), after a question from Ayre & Michael MHK Tim Baker.

Analysis last year found the average download rate in the Isle of Man is just over 9 megabits per second (Mbps), some way behind the UK average of 16.5.

A ministerial working group, due to publish a report in March, will conclude providers here should be able to guarantee at least 30mbps in all areas.
