Plaque to commemorate HMS Racehorse crew to be unveiled

Shipwreck proved to be a catalyst in formation of RNLI

A plaque commemorating a shipwreck - that proved to be a catalyst in the formation of the RNLI - will be unveiled in the south of the Island today (Weds).

HMS Racehorse sank 200 years ago resulting in the deaths of its crewmen - which included three men from Castletown.

The event led to Sir William Hillary lobbying the UK Government for a maritime lifesaving organisation.

The plaque will be unveiled on the quay next to the Castletown Harbour Office at 2pm.
