Upbeat police view of festive period

Signs of historic low in drink-drive arrests

The police say they're very happy with how the festive period has gone, particularly with regard to drink-driving.

Early figures show just two people have been charged with the offence.

Arrests for other offences were no more than the average, and New Year's Eve was relatively quiet - officers were called out to around 40 jobs, a number of those being complaints about noisy house parties.

Between 21 and 30 December, there were 500 logged calls to the Constabulary.

Several people were in police cells on New Year's Day morning, detained as a result of alcohol-related incidents.
