Police warn of 'fraud department' scam

People tricked out of thousands of pounds

Police have issued a warning following a number of reports of a scam which has 'sadly resulted in thousands of pounds being lost'.

It involves Island residents receiving calls from people purporting to be from NatWest/Isle of Man Bank fraud departments.

The callers advise recipients of charges made to their bank cards, typically in the form of flights.

These calls are fake.

Police have said 'if in doubt, hang up and call the number on the back of your bank card, but beware of scammers holding the line open'.

In a statement, they said: 'Often when we talk about scams, we discuss them in financial terms and don't talk about the emotional impact they can have. But they can leave us feeling embarrassed, unsettled and unsafe, and have a lasting impact on our confidence. They can also leave us feeling unsure about who we can trust.

'If you've been scammed, it's important to reach out and talk about what's happened. These scams are increasingly sophisticated and are purposefully designed to steal your money by posing as people or organisations you trust.

'Always ignore a caller that asks you for personal information, such as your PIN, or tells you that your computer has a virus. A genuine organisation will never ask you for these details over the phone, in an email or in writing.'

This update from police follows similar reports from a Manx Radio listener, who contacted our Mannin Line programme to warn other listeners last week.
