Post office corporatisation plans rejected

Defeat for government

Plans to corporatise the Isle of Man Post Office have been dramatically thrown out in Tynwald.

After a three hour debate, proposals to change the structure of the body were rejected.

Five of six recommendations contained in an independent report assessing its future operation were defeated after members felt the Island would not benefit from running the post office as a state-owned company rather than a statutory board.

Members did support the principle of corporatisation by backing the other recommendation.

The vote was 12-12 in the Keys, which meant the proposals failed, despite getting support in the Legislative Council by six votes to three.

Economic Development Minister Laurence Skelly denied it was an embarrassing defeat for the government.
