Postal workers vote in favour of strike action

Island postal workers have voted overwhelmingly in favour of strike action.

The workers are involved in a dispute over pay with Post Office management.

In the first ever secret strike ballot of members of the Communication Workers Union at the company, 84 per cent voted in favour of action. The turnout was 85.5 per cent.

The CWU represents 250 postal workers on the Island. Workers believe they are due a rise to recognise their contribution to increased profits at the Post Office.

Management claims they must abide by the government's public sector pay freeze.

CWU Assistant Secretary Terry Pullinger says the result should be used by all parties to focus on solutions and not strikes.
