Charity says not everyone qualifies for help when they need it
Some of the practical challenges of the Island's benefits system need to be addressed to help those in need of support.
That's from the chief executive of a charity that helps those struggling to make ends meet.
The Isle of Man Foodbank has seen an increase in people seeking support since September.
Neal Mellon says not everyone qualifies for benefits when they need assistance:
In response, a Treasury spokesperson told Manx Radio:
"The Treasury has discretion to award income-related benefits to non-Isle of Man workers in exceptional circumstances where it would be harsh or oppressive not to.
"In the example provided by Mr Mellon, the lady would have been an Isle of Man worker by virtue of her marriage to an Isle of Man worker even after this relationship had ended, and so would have in fact met the residency test for entitlement to income related benefits.
"Existing legislation requires a minimum 10 years living on the Island to qualify for public sector housing; importantly it also provides the housing provider with discretion to reduce this requirement in cases where the applicant or their family have demonstrated that they have significant housing need."
