Prison sees 'significant' increase in population over last 12 months

Minister credits police's work tackling drug crimes for increase

The Isle of Man Prison has seen a 'significant' increase in population, and currently is only 13 spaces away from maximum capacity.

In less than a year, almost 40 new offenders have been locked up, which the Department of Home Affairs believes is due to the Constabulary's work to tackle drug importation and distribution.

Questions were asked in Tynwald about whether it would be possible to deport prisoners who are from off Island, but Minister Jane Poole-Wilson told the court the UK is seeing 'severe' strain on its prison population.
