Prisoners need support after release

MBE calls for rehabilitation focus

An Islander honoured for her work in the prison service says there needs to be a better understanding of the support prisoners require when they are released.

Aileen Gelling received an MBE in the Queen's New Year Honours list, having served for 15 years on the Isle of Man Prison’s independent monitoring board, including nine as chair.

Last year, Tynwald received a raft of recommendations aimed at reforming the justice system and cutting re-offending.

Now retired, Mrs Gelling says vast reform improvements have been made locally - but adds it’s no surprise why many struggle to find a place in society after they are freed.
