Probation for baseball bat wielding man

33 year old confronted group of men who'd been threatening him

A court's heard repeated threats led a Douglas man to smash a window with a baseball bat.

Thirty-three-year-old Matthew David Joseph Prendergast of Mona Street appeared before High Bailiff Jayne Hughes at Douglas Courthouse.

He pleaded guilty to criminal damage in Mona Street on 21 July.

Prosecutor Rebecca Cubbon withdrew a separate charge of having an offensive weapon in public.

The hearing was told Prendergast had been at home at around 5.30pm on 21 July, when a stone was thrown through his window.

He went outside and confronted a group of men who'd been threatening him, breaking a window with the bat.

His advocate told the court Prendergast was a heroin addict who'd been repeatedly targeted by the same group.

Mrs Hughes asked for probation reports to be prepared before Prendergast is sentenced, and bailed him to return to court on 17 September.
