Probation for man who made ‘extremely abusive’ racial comments towards PC

High Bailiff ‘particularly unimpressed’ with 29-year-old’s conduct

A Ramsey man who made ‘extremely abusive’ racial comments about a police officer has been handed a 12-month probation order.

Jason Liam Christian, of Bircham Avenue Close, was sentenced at Douglas Courthouse this week for being drunk and disorderly and misusing the 999 communication network.

The 29-year-old encountered police officers in a car park on Bowring Road at 7.15pm on 14 July – they were dealing with a separate incident and asked him to leave the area.

Christian, who was drunk, refused and picked up one of the officer’s helmets and put it on; he then became abusive towards them and asked one constable for a fight.

At 3.15am the next morning Christian called 999 to make a complaint about how he’d been treated during the exchange.

He told the operator he was going to go into the town with a chainsaw and ‘kill people’ and proceeded to make comments about one of the officers involved.

Taser trained officers were sent to his home address and arrested him.

During sentencing High Bailiff Jayne Hughes said she was ‘particularly unimpressed’ with the comments he’d made which she described as ‘extremely abusive in a racial way’.

She also imposed a six-month licensing ban and ordered Christian to pay prosecution costs of £125.
