Probation for man who threatened to decapitate people with chainsaw

30-year-old's behaviour described as 'pure muppetry'

A Ramsey man who rang the Emergency Services Joint Control Room threatening to decapitate people with a chainsaw has been ordered to work with the Island's probation service.

Jason Liam Christian, of Bircham Avenue Close, was drunk when he called 999 just before 11pm on 26 April.

He told the operator: "I’ve got a chainsaw and I'm going to cut peoples' heads off."

When police arrested the 30-year-old he told them he'd drunk two bottles of vodka and couldn't remember making the call – no chainsaw was found at his property.

Three days later he called 999 again, just after 11.30am, telling them ‘the patient’ was dead.

Despite being asked not to he made a number of repeat calls.

During his arrest he told the officer: "I can't believe I'm being arrested for calling the police."

Christian later admitted two offences of making persistent use of the public communications network – he was on probation at the time.

Describing the offending as 'pure muppetry' his advocate told Magistrates: "The emergency services have got better things to do.

"Clearly one just wants to give him a kick up the proverbial behind," he added.

Christian has served four weeks in custody at the Isle of Man Prison after refusing to cooperate with the court during a previous appearance - the equivalent of an eight-week sentence.

This behaviour, the advocate said, was evidence he wasn’t ‘firing on all cylinders’ with the court told he was also alcohol dependent.

“When he’s sober he’s a delight to talk to,” the advocate added: “It’s a sad case really – I hope he can change.”

Imposing a new 18-month probation order Magistrates told Christian: “You’ve begun to recognise you’ve got a serious drinking issue. Maybe this is the wake-up call you need.”
