Peel commissioner to stand for Keys

Ray Harmer is one of three candidates to declare to stand in Peel

A candidate in the House of Keys by-election in Peel says his experience at the helm of the town's commissioners has inspired him to seek a role on the national political stage.

Ray Harmer is one of three candidates to declare they will contest the seat left vacant by Tim Crookall, elected to Legislative Council in June.

Mr Harmer has been a Peel commissioner for six years and is currently serving his fourth term as chairman.

He says the authority continues to address major infrastructure issues facing the town - such as sewerage, housing and roads.

He says joined-up thinking has helped improve playground facilities at Peel Clothworkers school - and is a template he claims would work Island-wide.

Leslie Hanson and David Pownall have also declared they will stand in the Peel by election, on 10 September.

Nominations close on 10 August.
