Prosecuted fisherman is on scallop board

Second incident of member breaching regulations

Another member of the Island's Scallop Management Board been prosecuted for illegal fishing.

It’s the second time in recent months that a serving member of the regulatory board has breached regulations.

It’s further embarrassment for fishery officials.

Last November, Melvyn Reid was caught catching king scallops in his own vessel off Douglas – less than half an hour before boats were legally allowed to do so.

Mr Reid of Ramsey was fined £5,000 by magistrates and resigned from the board.

Now John King of West Coast Sea Products has been fined the same amount after one of his company’s vessels was caught violating fishing laws.

Despite not having permission, the Kingfisher was found fishing for king scallops within three nautical miles of the Manx coast and has had its licence suspended for three months.

He’s pleaded guilty and is also now expected to be forced to stand down.
