Public can help ease pavement problem

As the freezing temperatures continue, the Department of Infrastructure says it will do what it can to clear icy pavements, but is limited by the scale of its own resources.

While most of the main roads around the Island have been kept open by the department's teams of gritters and snow ploughs, pavements in some places have been treacherous, with lying snow on top of compacted ice.

Deputy civil engineering manager Alan Hardinge says the pavements are the responsibility of the department, but it can only do so much (first part of audio file):

He is urging people to try and help themselves by collecting and applying salt from the bins around the Island, but says the department will try and help if it is asked to (second part of audio file):
