Focus groups to discuss further care support issues
There were calls for urgent changes to be made to the system of funding for those in nursing and residential care at a public meeting last night (31 Jan).
At the Manx Legion Club more than eighty people gathered to hear Treasury officials explain the current support available, and take questions from the audience.
Many of the audience expressed frustration over having to pay 'top up fees' to fund their care, the impact this has on families and over fears of being 'asset stripped' in later life.
Despite assurances from Policy and Reform Minister Chris Thomas MHK, and Treasury member Ralph Peake, concerns over future funding arrangements remained.
Those at the meeting were invited to sign up to focus groups to further discuss issues surrounding support for those in care in more detail.
Speaking after the meeting Legion Club president Major Charles Wilson said the impetus was now on the public to engage with the debate.
Treasury Head of Social Security, Ross Stephens said the input gathered at the meeting was vital in helping civil servants now come up with solutions to the problems raised.
