Public views sought on future of Manx democracy

Government consults on electoral reform

The Manx Government has launched a public consultation on electoral reform, as part of a 'root and branch review' of our democratic process.

Questions cover issues such as fines for those who fail to register to vote, the timing of elections, rules for candidates and alternatives to voting in person.

Policy and Reform Minister Chris Thomas says changes to our elections may not seem a priority, but are fundamental to our democratic system.

Meetings have been held between all the 2016 Keys candidates, returning officers, political parties and local authorities to discuss the matter, prior the launch of the document.

A committee on the organisation and operation of the 2016 general election heard of botched ballot box counts in Ayre and Michael, and highlights issues with advertising requisition meetings and inconsistencies with returning officers.

If you'd like to submit your views via the consultation, which closes on May 20, head online to the government's website: consult.gov.im/cabinet-office/elections-that-work-for-everyone/consultation/
