Queenie fishing still subject to reduced catch limits

2020 season starts today

The Island's queen scallop industry is still subject to reduced catch limits.

That's from the Department of Environment, Food and Agriculture as the season begins (from 1 July).

In 2019 fishing quotas were cut after it was found queenie stocks were at their lowest since 1993.

Last year a survey had been undertaken by scientists at Bangor University, however restrictions over the coronavirus pandemic have meant they weren't able to carry out another this year.

Instead the university worked with the Manx Fish Producers' Organisation (MFPO) and local fishing crews to collect data.

DEFA says the total allowable catch for the season is to be set at 557 tonnes.
