Frequency of closures reportedly affecting businesses in the north
A Ramsey businessman says a constructive debate must be held on how and when the Mountain Road is closed.
Captain Kuba Szymanski of Ramsey Shipping Services is questioning whether the route from Ramsey to Douglas over the mountain should be shut off as often as it is.
He says sometimes, in strong winds, traffic is then forced onto roads where falling branches could pose a greater hazard.
Mr Szymanski says his research shows an increase in frequency and length of closure orders.
"What we were interested in was trend - and the trend is…raising number of closure days. That is hurting a lot of us here in Ramsey." - Captain Kuba Szymanski
He told Manx Radio he has spoken with others in the town about it:
"Is this a matter of road safety or do we not have the infrastructure to clear the road safely?" - Ramsey MHK Alex Allinson
Meanwhile, Ramsey MHK Alex Allinson says he is tabling a question for the infrastructure minister at the next House of Keys session about this matter:
The Department of Infrastructure has been approached for comment.
