Record-breaking weekend for Beach Buddies

Over 230 people involved in northern clean-up

It was another record-breaking weekend for Beach Buddies.

More than 230 people attended two big clean-up events as part of the Great British Spring Clean over the weekend.

Organiser Bill Dale says many were getting involved for the first time, tackling beaches, parks, footpaths, hedges and fences in Ramsey and Jurby.

The first event of the weekend saw 156 members of Ramsey Youth Centre FC's juniors turn out in force with their parents, plus Beach Buddies volunteers, the biggest number for a Ramsey event in the 12-year history of the organisation.

Sunday saw two events combined, when Beach Buddies volunteers teamed up with the people of Jurby for a community clean-up around the village at the same time as a beach cleaning event at nearby Sartfield.

Seventy-five volunteers collected an estimated two-thirds of a tonne of rubbish, another record.

Bill says anyone who may have organised their own event over the weekend should let him know and he will add the extra information to the figures being sent to the "Keep Britain Tidy" organisation.
