Reduction in fuel duty is a non-starter

Treasury Minister Anne Craine says the Isle of Man can't afford to reduce fuel duty at the pumps.

She is responding to reports that Chancellor George Osborne is seeking permission from the European Commission to take such action in remote parts of the United Kingdom.

A price cut of 5p per litre has been suggested, to help motorists in communities like Scotland's Western Isles and the Isles of Scilly.

It's been suggested the Manx government should follow suit, to help drivers here.

But Mrs Craine says fuel duties make a significant contribution to government revenues and, in the current climate, the Island just can't afford to offer dispensation:
