Remand for man who burgled ex-partner’s home whilst brandishing rod

33-year-old will be sentenced in New Year

A Ramsey man will be sentenced in the New Year after breaking into his ex-girlfriend’s home whilst brandishing a metal rod.

Shaun David Bignall, of Mooragh Promenade, admitted burglary with intent to damage and damaging property during an appearance at Douglas Courthouse.

The 33-year-old turned up at the property, on Queens Pier at 3.30am on 2 October, kicking the garden gate off its hinges before kicking the door to the house so hard it bent and broke.

Bignall, whose actions were observed by the woman’s 12-year-old child, was described as being ‘possessed like’; he’d also smashed all of the windows in a campervan outside.

After being asked to stop what he was doing Bignall responded: “I haven’t even started yet.”

Two days earlier, on 30 September, the woman had ended their relationship.

Bignall had responded by throwing a gym weight through the window of the campervan outside before spitting at the TV.

He also admitted damaging property on that date.

Bignall’s advocate told the court the woman had withdrawn the complaint she made to the police adding: “The major issue with Mr Bignall is his mental health.”

A social enquiry report will be compiled before Bignall is sentenced on 26 January – an application for bail was refused and he was remanded at the Isle of Man Prison.
