Reported 'gas leak' turns out to be 'pungent fruit'

Teams made discovery at Spectrum Apartments this morning (6 March)

A reported 'gas leak' in Douglas this morning (6 March) was instead found out to be fumes from a pungent-smelling fruit.

Teams were called to Spectrum Apartments on Central Promenade at around 4am to investigate reports of a suspected leak.

On arrival, crews discovered the source of the smell was in fact a durian fruit.

The fruit, the fire service says, 'gives off a very pungent smell and can waft some distance'.

As a precaution, teams checked the corridors, underground car park and several apartments with gas detection equipment.

However, all readings came back normal.

The service adds other fire services in the likes of Australia and the USA have also attended similar incidents involving the durian fruit in the past.
